Because I’ve never drawn Mawile before I couldn’t help but think to myself that Mawile makes no sense biologically. No animals look like it, no humanoids look like it… so what the heck is it?

So I decided on a bug, probably one related distantly to Beedril and Durant. I haven’t decided yet, but I like to think that the mouths on the back of its head are actually modified wings; it’s lost the ability to fly, so to compensate it scares off predators with the terrifying mimicry it displays on its backside. The cryptic yellow/black markings also warn that others won’t have a fun time tangling with it. It’s worked so well that it’s grown to terrific sizes, completely obscuring the Mawile’s regular body. A complex nervous system also exists within, so that the “mouths” can detect when a threat may be nearby, allowing the mawile to “open” or “close” them. They are also hard and difficult to break, working like a specialized carapace. Mawile are hard to find in the wild, so many liken them to mythical fairies that ward off evil spirits.
